PetSmart Acquisition of Chewy Affecting Some High End Brands

We ordered both dog and cat food from online retailer,, for years. The prices were good and convenience was important. They didn’t charge shipping for our orders and the package was delivered right to our front door. Several months ago, PetSmart announced that they were purchasing, and many consumers wondered if other changes were in store.  Soon after the announcement, Tuffy’s Pet Foods pulled their retail brands, Pure Vita, NutriSource, and Natural Planet, from the Chewy website offerings.  A month ago, two more companies pulled their brands from the Chewy website.  Fromm Family Foods and Champion Pet Foods have also stopped selling their products on

Champion believes that because of the PetSmart acquisition, Chewy will no longer fit their company’s definition of a pet specialty retailer. In the August, 2017, issue of “Pet Age Magazine,” Champion released a statement:  “For more than 25 years, Champion Pet Food’s commitment to pet specialty retailers has been clear and non-negotiable. Upon the acquisition of the online retailer Chewy by PetSmart, Chewy no longer meets our definition of pet specialty.”
