The Best Dog Foods Contain Healthy Fats

August 9, 2012

Read the pet food ingredients label on any commercial food package, and you’ll find that they all contain some kind of fat or oil.  These fats are needed to help bind the kibble and help animals digest the food.  It’s important to know what’s good and what’s not so good for your pet before purchasing that expensive package.

Flaxseed oil is a good fat and is usually found listed as an ingredient in the more expensive brands of pet food.  A named meat fat, such as chicken fat, is a good choice and contains nutrients a dog needs.

Many well-known brands of pet food use cheaper sources of fat in their foods, and they are not always a healthy choice for an animal.  For example, you may see “animal fat” listed.  Animal fat comes from the tissue of various animals through the rendering process.  After rendering, the greasy mess that is leftover is tallow, or animal fat.  Tallow is inedible for humans, but it’s considered just fine for your dog by the powers-that-be in the pet food manufacturing world.

Animal fat originally comes from unknown sources, such as meat by-products, discarded restaurant grease and dead animals.  Restaurant greases are discarded oils and fats that are saved up in large drums and then hauled away by rendering companies.  These containers can sit outside in very hot temperatures for weeks at a time, and the contents become rancid.

When choosing dog food, make sure to read the label so you can avoid animal fat, poultry fat and rendered or recycled fats.  Look for named species fats or healthy oils.  Don’t be fooled by fancy ads produced by pet food manufacturers.  They are in business to make money, not worry about your pet’s overall health.  A good place to purchase your pet foods and other supplies is wag.com.  This company is an affiliate of our website.  Any commissions we earn from your purchasing through links on this site will benefit Seniors for Pets, a non-profit that helps seniors in need with veterinary costs for their dogs and cats.
