Comparing Kibbles ‘n Bits and Blue Buffalo – Apples to Oranges

Blue Buffalo’s Life Protection Formula
Lamb & Brown Rice Formula – Adult Dogs

Until a couple of years ago, I didn’t know much about the “Blue” brand, but their television advertising changed that.  I like the fact that the company’s ads tout truly healthy ingredients – not just colorful words and pictures that make you think the food is healthy and in reality, mask essential problems with their foods, as some pet food brands do.   Blue’s Life Protection Formula contains a boatload of healthy ingredients.

Kibbles ‘n Bits, a DelMonte Foods product, has been around a long time.  I’m sorry to say that I don’t think the food has improved with age.

In the Kibbles ‘n Bits dog food, we have a product that contains NO real beef or chicken in the food.  I guess it considers the third ingredient, beef and bone meal, it’s major protein source.  Beef and bone meal is a cheap, low-quality product that is basically what’s leftover from human food production after the good stuff is removed.  Soybean meal is another cheap source of protein and since it has little nutritional value, it just takes up space.   Dogs don’t easily digest soy.

The chicken flavor in the food comes from the animal digest.  Animal digest can contain all sorts of problems, since it is a rendered product.  You have no way of knowing what’s in it.  The list continues with vitamins, which are good, and  artificial colors, which are not.

If you weren’t already convinced that this is not a good choice for Fido, the inclusion of BHA as a preservative, and propylene glycol should be the final straw for this dog food as a possibility for your pet.  BHA is a potential carcinogen.  Propylene glycol is toxic in large amounts.  Imagine that building up in your beloved pet’s system after being eaten twice a day for a long time.

When comparing these two dog foods, it’s like comparing apples to oranges.  The Blue Buffalo food has a few things that I would like to change but all in all, it’s a good choice to promote a healthy dog.  The Kibbles ‘n Bits product really has no redeeming features.  It contains all the bad-for-Fido ingredients that I was taught are not good choice.  The decisions are yours.  Educate yourself and buy a food that provides exactly what your dog needs.
